Synopsis

In two, separate randomized controlled trails (N=285, N=118), knee and hip replacement patients were randomized to one of three, single-session, brief mind-body interventions prior to surgery. Results indicated a brief, preoperative mindfulness-based intervention 1) immediately decreased preoperative pain, 2) prevented postoperative pain and opioid use in the first month after surgery, and 3) improved physical function by the 6-week postoperative follow-up visit. Findings suggest that embedding brief mindfulness-based interventions in surgical care pathways has the potential to improve surgical outcomes for the millions of patients receiving knee and hip replacements each year.
